Google Photos can upload new photos, videos, screenshots, and selected device folders automatically. Those background uploads may use a limited travel eSIM allowance unless mobile-backup settings are reviewed before the trip.
Open Mobile data usage
- Open Google Photos.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Choose Photos settings → Backup → Mobile data usage.
- Review the daily backup limit, video backup, and roaming options.
Google states that this menu can set a daily mobile-data limit, disable video backup over data, and control backup while roaming. The exact options can vary by app version and account.
Use Wi-Fi-only backup for maximum control
For a small travel allowance, turn off mobile backup and allow it to continue on trusted Wi-Fi. Videos are usually much larger than photos, so disabling mobile video backup is especially important.
Check device folders and accounts
Google Photos may back up more than the camera folder. Review screenshots, messaging media, downloads, and other device folders. If several Google accounts are used on the phone, confirm the backup status and settings for the account currently selected.
Verify that backup has paused
Return to the Photos screen and read the backup status. Then check the phone's per-app data counter after a short period. Use our unexpected data-use checklist and remaining-data guide if consumption continues.
