There is no dependable per-hour figure for web browsing because modern pages vary enormously. A simple text page can be light, while a news, shopping, or social page may load large images, advertising, trackers, audio, and autoplay video.
Recognize heavy web pages
Video backgrounds, image galleries, interactive maps, livestreams, and repeated page refreshes increase consumption. Downloading menus, tickets, software, or documents also counts as browser use even though it is not ordinary reading.
Reduce unnecessary transfers
- Close tabs that continue playing or refreshing in the background.
- Use reader mode for text articles where available.
- Turn off browser autoplay.
- Avoid repeatedly downloading the same files.
- Save essential tickets and confirmations while on Wi-Fi.
Do not judge by time alone
Ten minutes on a video-heavy page can use more data than a much longer period reading text. The best estimate comes from a short test: note your browser's data counter, browse normally, and check the difference.
Find usage outside the browser
A website may hand a download to another app or open streaming media in a separate player. Review data use across both apps. See why data may fall unexpectedly and whether 1 GB suits light travel use.
